From air traffic controller to engineer to vet technician, there are hundreds of apprenticeships tailored to meet your business needs. Each apprenticeship is carefully designed by groups of employers and trailblazers to ensure it aligns with the specific knowledge, skills and behaviours required for different occupations within various sectors.

There are different types and levels of apprenticeships to suit different stages of life and career. Foundation apprenticeships (level 2) are designed for young people just starting out, and apprenticeships (levels 2 to 7) are open to anyone, regardless of age. 

If you have an employee that would benefit from a short training course in artificial intelligence, construction, or engineering, they could do an apprenticeship unit.

Off-the-job training

‘Off-the-job’ training is what your apprentice will do to become competent in their role. It can be flexible and doesn’t have to mean 1 day out of the workplace every week. You can find out more about off-the-job training on the responsibilities as an employer page.

Things to consider

• Select the right training: ensure the training aligns with your business needs
• Level and duration: consider the skill level and duration of the training
• Communicate expectations: discuss your expectations with the training provider to ensure they're met
• Flexibility: ensure the training plan is adaptable to your business and the learner's needs.

Flexi-job apprenticeships

If you work in a sector with short-term contracts or other non-standard employment models, you can still access the benefits of apprenticeships through Flexi-Job Apprenticeships.

You can use a Flexi-Job Apprenticeship Agency. The agency directly employs the apprentice but arranges placements with host businesses. You can see the full list of the agencies on the register of flexi-job apprenticeship agencies.

Alternatively, the apprentice can secure multiple short-term contracts directly with businesses that support the requirements of the apprenticeship.
